Being a material applied in situ, polyurethane presents a great versatility and countless advantages in their application. The quality of sprayed and injected polyurethane is standardized by the European Standards UNE-EN 14315 and UNE-EN 14318, being mandatory throughout the European Union from 1 November 2014. These standards include the specifications of both the systems before installation and the foam once installed.
Reception control on site
The aim of the on-site acceptance control is to check that the technical characteristics of the polyurethane systems supplied comply with the project requirements. Since November 2014, it is mandatory to present the CE Marking and Performance Declaration of polyurethane systems.
- Original documents, delivery sheet and labelling.
- Manufacturer's Warranty Certificate.
- Regulatory Conformity Documents (CE and DOP marking).
Reception control by quality marks:
- Provided by the supplier.
- The director of the execution of the project will verify that this documentation is sufficient for the acceptance of what is covered by it.
Reception control by means of tests:
- In certain cases, at the discretion of the project or project management.
On-site execution control
The execution control during the work must be carried out by the applicator and the project manager together.
In the case of the applicator, they must ensure that the environmental conditions are suitable for the application of polyurethane, whether sprayed or injected. These conditions must be specified in the product data sheet and, unless otherwise stated, must be as follows:
- Ambient temperature: between 5ºC and 40ºC.
- Substrate temperature: greater than 5ºC.
- Ambient humidity: less than 85%.
- Porous substrate humidity: less than 20%.
- Non-porous substrate moisture: dry.
On the other hand, the project manager is in charge of controlling the following aspects:
- Cleaning the base of the floor slab in facade projection to guarantee a good adhesion in the projection on facades.
- Monitoring the application for optimum thickness.
- Protecting the elements susceptible to be stained.
- Controlling the treatment of thermal bridges.
- Controlling the existence of vapour barrier.
Control of the finished work
The control of the finished polyurethane construction site can be carried out in three different ways.
If the application company has a quality certification and uses quality certified systems, we should request these documents in order to verify the results of the self-controls carried out by the applicator.
If the application company does not have a quality certification and uses quality certified systems, we can request system certificates or an internal thickness test to be carried out for every 100 m2 and an internal density test per day.
If the application company does not have a quality certification and uses systems without quality certification, we can ask for the report of the reaction to fire test, ask for an external thermal conductivity test to be carried out for each work unit, or ask for an internal thickness test to be carried out for every 100 m2 and an internal density test to be carried out every day.
