SyntheFOC: improving reaction to fire performance in facade insulation systems

Fire safety is a fundamental aspect in the design of building envelopes. In facade systems and external insulation solutions, the reaction-to-fire behaviour of materials and the overall system directly influences fire spread and overall building safety.

SyntheFOC is a solution developed by Synthesia Technology that improves the reaction to fire performance of insulation systems based on sprayed polyurethane foam, achieving a B-s1,d0 classification according to EN 13501-1.

SyntheFOC: improving reaction to fire performance in façade insulation systems

A system-based approach

SyntheFOC is not a standalone product, but a constructive system that combines:

  • Rigid sprayed polyurethane foam.
  • A specially formulated single-component mortar coating.

The combined application of these components improves the reaction to fire performance of the insulation system while maintaining the benefits of continuous sprayed insulation.

This system-based approach is essential, as fire performance is evaluated on the complete assembly rather than on individual materials.

Sprayed polyurethane in the building envelope

Sprayed polyurethane is widely used in facades due to its ability to create a continuous insulation layer that adheres to the substrate without joints. This continuity helps reduce thermal bridges and facilitates adaptation to complex geometries.

The incorporation of the SyntheFOC system improves the reaction to fire performance of the assembly without altering these construction advantages.

System applications

SyntheFOC can be integrated into common envelope solutions:

Ventilated facades

In ventilated facades, continuous sprayed insulation ensures proper adaptation to the substrate and promotes thermal continuity. The incorporation of the SyntheFOC system enhances the reaction to fire performance of the assembly, providing an additional level of safety.

External Thermal Insulation Systems (ETICS)

In external insulation systems, continuous sprayed polyurethane avoids joints and discontinuities. The SyntheFOC system contributes to improving the reaction to fire performance while maintaining thermal performance.

System benefits

  • Reaction to fire classification B-s1,d0 according to EN 13501-1.
  • Improved fire performance of the insulation system.
  • Continuous insulation without joints.
  • Good adhesion to common substrates.
  • Adaptability to modern facade solutions.

Safety and performance in the building envelope

Facade design requires balancing energy efficiency, durability and safety. Improving reaction to fire performance is an increasingly relevant factor in construction projects.

The SyntheFOC system improves the fire behaviour of sprayed polyurethane-based solutions, facilitating their integration into facades where this aspect is a project requirement.
