Radon gas is very present in a large part of the peninsula. Specifically, large areas of Galicia, as well as Extremadura, Castilla León and the Community of Madrid are affected by this gas. Its sustained inhalation over long periods of time is closely related to health problems, especially the risk of contracting lung cancer. To avoid these risks and, in addition, to comply with the national and international legislative framework, it is necessary to take measures in buildings and carry out the necessary modifications to prevent its spread.
As for radon in new construction, it should not exceed 200 Bq/m³ according to the annual average value of concentration at the design level indicated by the European Commission. Thus, in this phase it is necessary to analyze the points through which the gas enters the interior, to subsequently locate the soil, analyze the solutions to be applied and determine the points with the greatest risk.
Anti-radiation solutions in new buildings
Among the most effective solutions is the anti-radon barrier that is placed under the basement floor, on the outside of the wall that is in contact with the ground. Another option is the barrier placed on the slab, whose action is reinforced by an opposite, natural or mechanical ventilation. Another alternative is to extract the radon gas and conduct it to the outside.
Polyurethane is one of the best materials to create an anti-radon barrier, since it offers a continuous surface, without joints, totally waterproof and it adapts to any particularity of the ground with, in addition, an excellent mechanical resistance. Thus, the sprayed polyurethane is presented as the most effective system as an anti-radon barrier in new construction.
Radon gas insulation with Synthesia product S-35RGB-ECO
However, in addition to its insulating properties, it is an effective barrier against radon gas, as it is a polyurethane insulation system with a closed cell structure and its spray formation provides a continuous, stable and seamless layer.
Thus, Polyuretan Spray S-35RGB-ECO is applied with a high-pressure gun, adhering easily to all types of substrates. It does not require adhesives or anchors, although in the case of steel, it is advisable to apply a primer. Therefore, it can be sprayed on ceilings, walls and floors, offering an excellent performance from the spray.
It should be noted that the properties of the insulation layer will be affected by temperature, humidity and soil conditions. The settings of the machinery as well as the mixing ratio are also decisive. It is therefore recommended that the installation is always carried out by professional hands.
On the other hand, Polyurethane Spray S-35RGB-ECO is environmentally friendly, since it is formulated with the latest technology of physical foaming agents, hydrofluoroolefins (HFO) of 4th generation, which have a global warming potential 99.9% lower than other generations of polyurethane foams. In addition, they do not adversely affect the ozone layer.
